Do Not Ignore Depression | Depression Is Treatable

Depression is such a mental problem where a person feels disappointed, frustrated and indifference to anything for at least two weeks. In addition to that, different types of physical and emotional symptoms appear. Because of depression, the personal, familial, educational, professional and social life of a person is damaged and normal activities are hampered.

Different studies show that 5 to 17 percent of the world's population are suffering from depression. According to a report, conducted by the World Mental Health Survey in 17 countries, there is 1 depressed person among 20 adult men and women.

Every year, the World Health Day is observed on April 7th. Like other years, a theme was set for the day this year(2017). The theme was 'Depression- Let's Talk'. Considering the importance of public health, the theme was very timely for the world. According to the World Health Organization's (WHO) estimation, the burden of depression will remain its highest peak by 2030.

When a man suffers from depression, his personal life is damaged, family life is hampered; besides, because of non-productivity and treatment of a large number of depressed citizens, the socio-economic impact of depression is created in societies and states.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 3,000 people commit suicide every day around the world, that means about 8 million people commit suicide each year- most of these suicides occur due to depression. To prevent suicide also, the role of identifying and seeking the remedy of depression is important.

There is no reason to consider depression as a personal disorder, in public health, the impact of depression is widespread. To assess from the public perspective, the causes of depression have to be considered.

Generally, there are physical, mental and social causes behind depression. Those who are suffering from long-term physical disorders, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, respiratory problems etc., are prone to depression more. To identify and control these chronic diseases, awareness has to be made.

Emotional stress and personality form are responsible for depression. So, being stress free, to improve the quality of personality, social skills have to be increased since childhood.

Social discrimination, unrest, deprivation, and poverty create particular pressures. Depression may occur in somebody from these pressures. Necessary steps have to be taken for social protection. If there is a negative effect of the role of the parents in the upbringing of the children, if anybody is subjected to any kind of abuse, he may suffer from depression in future. It is urgent to prevent child oppression and, to become ideal parents.

After any disaster, the affected population falls into great trouble, which may lead them to depression. As soon as after the disaster, depression can be prevented by providing 'primary mental healthcare'.

Apart from focusing on the causes of depression, the misconceptions and misbeliefs about depression have to be minimized. Depression is a medical problem. We have to provide scientific information about its long-term and widespread negative effects.

The sooner depression can be diagnosed, the sooner it will be cured and the harmful effects will be reduced. For the treatment of depression, medicines have to be taken scientifically, and counseling services have to be taken if necessary. Not being confused with any advertisements, medicines for depression have to be taken regularly.

Effective role of health professionals, psychiatrists, policy makers, the media and the conscious society of all levels can contribute significantly to prevention, rapid identification, and remedies of depression. Giving importance to the theme of the World Health Day this year, let's talk about depression.

Prevent Obesity from early Age

The fact is, one in three American children and adolescents, aged two to nineteen are obese or overweight. According to the American Heart Association, none of the overweight or obese children meets the recommended healthy diet and physical activity. Most of the American children like french fries and fruit juice. And according to the statistics, french fries make up 25% vegetable intake and juice makes up 40% fruit intake in children. Acne Causes Before 20 | You can Ignore But a Teenager Not

Acne is nothing but a name of a tension of teenagers. I had acne on my face when I was a teenager. I am 32 now. I have no acne on my face but some exist on my back now. I know if I say, "Don't worry. Your(the teenagers) acne will vanish forever when you will grow up", it won't satisfy you.

It is true that acne exists in the twenties, thirties and a few in the forties. In women, it remains a little longer. But whatever I say, teenagers can not ignore acne as they are more conscious of their appearance. And whenever they go in front of the mirror, they become nervous to see acne on their face. And the result is depression, anxiety, low self-esteem etc.

Acne mostly appears on the face. It may also pop up on back, chest, shoulders and neck. Acne on the face is the main matter of concern. In this case, many questions come to teenager's mind. The first question comes, "Why does acne occur in teenage most?".

The causes of acne are many. During puberty and menstrual period hormonal activity increases. At this time, the rise of a sex hormone called 'Androgen' causes acne. The hormones that are directly and indirectly associated with acne are:
  • Androgens testosterone
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
  • Growth hormone (High levels) and
  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF- 1)
According to some studies, genetic factors are responsible for acne. That means you may get acne from your parents.

The other causes of acne may include:
  • Cosmetics (Greasy): Oil-based makeups are more responsible than water-based.
  • Androgen and lithium containing medicines and
  • Menstruation
Some causes may worsen acne. Such as:
  • Friction (to lean on skin or to rub the skin)
  • To pick or squeeze blemishes
  • Pressure from backpacks, helmets etc. and
  • Emotional Stress.
Many people blame infections and diet for acne. But the role of infection and diet is not clear or well understood.

How to reduce stomach gas?

Everyone experiences stomach gas from time to time. Gas also comes out. But sometimes, the problem is so acute that it becomes an embarrassing matter.

There are two reasons of stomach gas. Swallowing air while eating or drinking is one reason. The other reason is breaking dietary fibers in the small intestine. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide gases are produced first. Later they become methane. The germs of large intestine help in this change.

Normal amount of gas:
It is normal to regulate gas 15-20 times a day. It is the normal function of the digestive system.

Some advice to reduce stomach gas:
  • Eat and drink slowly. Chew food properly while eating. Soft drinks and water should not be swallowed up quickly. Talking should be limited while chewing foods. It will prevent air to enter the stomach.
  • Nobody should eat or drink with a straw. It helps air to enter the stomach that produces gas.
  • It is better to avoid chewing gum and candy. Soft drinks should be avoided too. There are many reasons against soft drinks.
  • Avoid smoking. While smoking, smoke does not go into the lungs only, rather it goes into the stomach also.
  • Exercise, especially moderate exercise such as walking 10 minutes after dinner makes the digestive system gas free.
  • Many people cannot digest milk. They can take lactase as supplement. They can also take old yogurt.
  • It is better to take more fruits, vegetables, legumes, coarse grains slowly. The number of intestinal bacteria will increase over time if these foods consumption is increased gradually. They will be able to break soluble fibers too.
  • Tight pants and belts put pressure on the stomach. It creates various types of problems in digestion. Besides, stomach is filled in gas.
Gas emission is embarrassing. However, it is a normal operation of the digestive system. Taking a few steps can dilute some of the problems. But consult a doctor if gas is produced in the stomach regularly.

Problems in Eyes in Middle Age

Along with some common problems, some particular problems are occurred in eyes in the middle and old age. Dr. Nafis Ahamed, senior consultant of eye department in Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital, has talked about it in an interview with nTV.bd recently. Many unknown and important things have come up in his speech. Let’s know the important things:

The first question is, what kinds of problems are occurred in the middle and old age? This can be divided into two parts. One is infective. It means infection which is occurred by germs such as bacteria. Another reason is non-infective or non-microbial. Among the microbial diseases, the most widespread is corneal ulcer. Another one is dakriosistitis, inflammation or infection of eye duct or tear duct. These two are very common. Conjunctivitis is also seen. These problems are caused by microbes.

Non-microbial diseases are also divided into two parts. One is reversible blindness. This blindness can be brought back to vision again. Cataracts is such kind of problem.

On the other hand, there are some diseases such as glaucoma, which is not reversible. So, the prevalent diseases are glaucoma, cataracts, corneal ulcer, dakriosistitis and problems occurred by injury.

There are many reasons of the reduction of the power of the eyes. It could be caused due to disease. Eye power may decrease close to the age of 40. This problem is related to age. The intensity of the problem increases slowly to 50 years of age.

One special kind of water is created in our eyes. There are some ways inside the eyes. The water gets out through the ways. For any reason, if the ways age blocked, water cannot pass through them. When water cannot go out, it creates pressure inside the eyes. These pressure affects the optic nerve. Optic nerve helps us to see. So, if the optic nerve is damaged, it will not be brought back again. It can be damaged if it is not diagnosed timely. And the ultimate result is blindness.

How much you know about Summer Heat Stroke?

Every year, temperature is rising. The earth is becoming warmer. But the temperature of human body is regulated internally. Our body tries to maintain its own temperature though the temperature of the environment is increased. Then the body starts to sweat. Sweat is evaporated and our body becomes cool. But if there is not enough stored water in the body, problems occur. The body becomes warmer with the increase of humidity. As a result, evaporating ability of sweat decreases. Thus the situation of heat stroke is created.

Who experience Heat Stroke:
Children and elderly people cannot regulate body temperature more. So, they could have heat stroke. In addition to that, labor may be a cause of heat stroke. Standing or working in the sun for a long time is also susceptible to heat stroke. Besides, some diseases are more vulnerable to heat stroke. Patients of skin disease such as ectodermal dysplasia and diabetes have a risk of severe heat stroke. In addition, there is a risk of heat stroke to those who take some medicines such as antihistamines, aspirin and medicines for mental illness. Obese people have high risk of heat stroke.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
Feeling tired, nausea, dizziness and feeling muscle pain are the early symptoms of heat stroke. At this level, the body temperature remains below 106 degree Fahrenheit. If the patient is not treated at the right time, he may become unconscious. Body temperature may rise above 106 degree Fahrenheit. Different types of organs of the body began to break down. When heart failure occurs, blood pressure decreases. Due to the damage in the lungs, breathing is disturbed. Urinating stops as the kidneys do not work. The body’s ability to coagulate blood reduces and bleeding from different parts of the body starts. Some of the symptoms of heat stroke are similar to the symptoms of various kinds of diseases such as cerebral malaria, meningitis, septicemia etc. Therefore, heat stroke and the diagnosis of diseases require caution.

What to do in case of heat stroke:
As it has been said earlier, some of the symptoms of heat stroke coincide with some diseases. The patient has to be taken to hospital as quickly as possible.
  • Patient has to be shifted warmer place from cold environment. If possible, keep the patient in air conditioned room.
  • Try to reduce body temperature anyhow. Wipe the whole body with water. If necessary, the body has to be covered with wet cloth.
  • The patient’s nose and mouth should be kept clean so that he can take breath easily.
  • In the hospital, oxygen is given. Besides oxygen, potassium and saline are given if the amount of potassium in the body decreases. In case of bleeding, blood has to be given.
However, one word has to be kept in mind that the patients of heat stroke are not given aspirin to reduce temperature. Because, aspirin increases the tendency of bleeding.

Do the following to avoid heat stroke:
  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. If possible, work in the open air.
  3. Wear light, loose cotton cloths.
  4. You can take shower twice a day.
  5. Take an umbrella when you go in the sun.
  6. Children and old should be more careful.
Be careful with the initial symptoms.

Life after Retirement

Job occupies a big part of our life. We are engaged in different kinds of works throughout life. We do job or business or make money anyhow. Time passes away. Our age increases and strength is reduced. The time of retirement comes. How everything changes!

Complex diseases in older age such as: diabetes, arthritis, bone loss disease, heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, hypertension etc. remain along with anxiety and depression. Because of having mental problems, aged people cannot follow the treatment methods of physical illness. As a result, their physical condition becomes worse. Depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, scared to death, schizophrenia, mania etc. are appeared. The quality of lifestyle becomes very lower. Sometimes they are neglected much. Even suicide tendency is seen among many of them.

Retirement time might be beautiful. For this, the retirees as well as the society have responsibility. After retirement, to reduce mental problems you can follow the following rules:

Consider retirement time as perfection. You have done enough throughout your life. Now, it is your right of taking rest and living in joy.

Do not care negative thinking. Even, do not call them by mouth. Not indulging in despair, be optimistic.

Avoid all kinds of criticism. There is no need to take responsibility of all the people of the world to show them right paths.

For retirement, make plans earlier. Save money so that you do not face poverty. Make a real plan how you will keep yourself busy in post-retirement period.

Never think that you are old. Thinking old means old. If you do not think, your mind will be fresh. Your body will be good also.

Develop friendly relations with children, husband or wife. Settle all kinds of disputes before retirement. Stay with grandchildren and play with them. Tell them stories, take them to school and help them. Mind it, being serious, being a source of fear are not a matter of pride.

Keep in touch with your roots. Go to your relatives and childhood friends. Establish a new meaning of life.

At the time of retirement, do something which you really enjoy doing.

You can do meditation. Walk regularly. Walking half an hour daily is not bad. Find out a partner for a walk. It will make your walk easy and interesting.

Take balanced diet. Keep your blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels under control. Control your body weight.

Take necessary treatment. Make medical checkup regularly. Start treatment if any problem is diagnosed. You can take physiotherapy for pain if needed. You can also take psychotherapy to reduce anxiety and depression.

Sleep adequately. However, do not sleep much. To pass time, make garden, plant trees.
Engage in household chores. Maintain a healthy routine of life

No Emotional Word to a Depressed Person

Depression could be the cause of pain and pain could be the cause of depression. Serotonin and dopamine level works to control balance each other. Pain may cause anxiety. For this, positive behavior, social relationships and finding out the matter what makes you happy are argent. To believe in fate and to be optimistic are not the same. Now, let us learn some words which we should not say to the person who is suffering from mental pain or depression.

If a person suffers from depression, never tell him, there are many people who are living in worse condition than you. Rather say, “You are not alone, I am on your side.”

Do not say the words to the man who is suffering from severe depression, “Everything does not remain in favor of man.” Say, “You are an important person to me.”

Do not say, “You should go to a vacation.” Because, he will not be free from depression just going somewhere else. MD. Norman Sussman, professor of psychology, New York University Langone Medical Center, said, “Depression lives with them and they suffer guilty as they does not feel good.”

You are showing him the easiest wrong way saying, “Smile or cheer up.” According to Sussman, it is the same to say this to a depressed person and to ask a person who has broken his leg it walk.

When you say to a man who is suffering from anxiety, there are many things for you to be grateful. Then he thinks, “I did not do anything to be happy, I am not grateful to life.” The person who suffer from anxiety, always suffer guilt and shame. If you could measure any way, then you could understand that the man who is suffering from anxiety tries relentlessly to be good. Nobody wishes to remain sad willingly.

According to Bandura’s theory of social action, your one step is enough to keep your life good. You have to believe that you will do something different. Your positive behavior will increase your belief. Fatalistic attitude destroys the faith. It is said in fatalism, everything in this world was predetermined so there is no option of changing fate. So, you have to believe that you can improve your situation with your efforts.

It is said, pregnancy is one of the prime times in a woman’s life. A great physical and mental change comes to her at that time. Along with this, she has to wait for her baby’s arrival. But, caring pregnancy is not a matter of the woman only. Husband and other family members have responsibility in this regard.

Whether it is the first child or the second, each pregnancy has different feelings. But, since it is the first experience, it takes time to adapt in the case of the first child. And both male and female should have understanding in this matter.

Pregnancy is such a period when your wife may avoid you sometimes. Sometimes she may not allow you to go away from her. Actually, it is your responsibility to tackle the time.

A very popular Indian lifestyle website 'Boldsky' informed us the important matters which men should know about women’s pregnancy. Let us know something about the important information-

Experts say, when a woman says that she is pregnant, you have to think that time has come to obey and sacrifice many things. Your wife expect your full attention at this time.

The first three months of pregnancy is very difficult. Women need a lot of rest during this time. The feeling of vomiting, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite are common this time. So, these things should be known by the other family members especially the husband.

Imbalance of hormone occurs during pregnancy. This changing of hormone changes the mental condition of the women. The unusual behavior of the wife may bother many husbands, but it is never a matter of joke. It is essential to give the time understanding the situation.

Money has to be collected, regular contact with the doctors is needed. A little negligence may cause death of baby or mother or both. So, be very conscious this time.

Injuries Increase Risk of Losing Job

Injured workers lose their jobs because of their injury, though the accidents occur in their own workplaces. A new study of nursing home workers in the US has found it. This incident happens even though the accident occurs due to lack of worker protections. Fox News reported the study on February 08, 2016.

In comparison with colleagues who reported no injuries, workers who were injured were more than twice as likely to be sacked within next six months.

Cassandre Okechukwa, the lead author from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, said that the results of the study demonstrate more risk of the workers being fired but they did not have data to ensure why workers were being fired actually.

The study also found that injured workers who sustained injury for multiple times were also twice as likely to retire within next six months as colleagues who had no injury.

Generally, workers are injured within the first several months of their new workplaces. The researchers said it in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine. As a result, this kind of job turnover may have chances that the injured workers will be injured again in a new work environment.

The researchers also pointed out that the state-level regulations are not followed always. The regulations protect workers from being sacked when they face injury. The regulations also say that employers must give workers necessary time and compensation so that the workers can be recovered from injury.

The researchers used data taken from another study which was conducted by the Work, Family and Health Network. That study involved direct care workers from 30 nursing homes in New England. The main goal of the study was to test workplace policies which can improve health, well-being and safety of the workers, one researcher said it by email.

The researchers analyzed data collected from 1,331 nursing home workers. They completed 4 interviews- at the beginning of the study, six months later, after one year and at last 18 months had passed.

According to the study, employers fired the injured workers they thought that the workers were not able to perform their job duties after injury. The employers were also worried that the workers might be injured again.

We have no hand in accident. It happens suddenly. In workplace, it can happen any time. Workers are not responsible for it. Employers should give workers all protective measures to avoid injury.

Smoking is a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis is known to all worldwide. The new findings suggested that environmental factors could also create rheumatoid arthritis in some people.

The researchers suspected that lung tissue might be changed by textile dust and the immune response might be triggered by it.

Since researchers are not clear about the matter that textile dust and rheumatoid arthritis are directly connected, more studies are needed to be ensured.

One of the researchers Bengtsson said that public health initiatives could play a crucial role in decreasing the burden of people particularly the people of developing countries where textile industries are common.

Researchers analyzed data on 910 Malaysian women who had no rheumatoid arthritis and 910 women who had the disease.

Researchers conducted their study on Malaysian women only because like other developing nations, most textile workers in Malaysia are women. On the other hand, they smoke less than their male counterparts.

The study found that the women who did not inhale the dust were 2.8 times less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than the women who inhaled the dust.

HLA-DRB1 SE, a genetic risk factor was carried by 40 percent of women who had rheumatoid arthritis.

Other factors like diet or textile industry related works might increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, one expert said it by email.

Rheumatoid arthritis can be prevented by giving up smoking and wearing masks in workplaces. The study strengthens the claim that occupation has a link to rheumatoid arthritis.
