Ebola,
Zika, MERS were the most discussed issues in the world in 2016. These different
kinds of viruses cause different kinds of diseases that ultimately cause
serious damage to body or mind and death. These three different types of
viruses appeared as a threat in three different continents - Ebola in
Africa, Zika in America(specially in South America), MERS in Asia(specially in
the Middle East).
In 2014 and 2015, it was Ebola. In 2016, it was Zika. The World Health Organization(WHO) cautioned that Zika crisis might surplus Ebola crisis. All kinds of
media published news about Zika. Many countries declared
emergency for this deadly virus. The virus spreaded through the whole
continent, America. Other countries were also at risk. Brazil declared war
against Zika as the country was most affected. Since mosquitoes bear Zika
virus, affected countries tried to demolish mosquitoes.
Spain was the first European country that confirmed Zika. A pregnant woman who returned from Colombia was diagnosed with the virus. BBC health reported it on Feb 04, 2016.
Although Zika has spread throughout America, Asia was free from the virus. But concern was rising and many countries started testing their citizens such as, India where the virus was found previously and two more Aedes mosquito borne diseases Dengue and Chikungunya are common. Ebola crisis was not getting priority in the world media in 2016. As the WHO declared that the affected countries were Ebola-free, the concern decreased significantly. BBC discussed details about Ebola in their health page. Since the crisis was under control, most of the top media were not publishing the latest condition of Ebola.
From the above discussion we can say that Zika was the main topic of discussion in 2016. After the end of Ebola crisis, Zika was standing as the new threat.
