Why can Iodine Deficiency become Fatal for you?

Iodine is very important for our body, though we rarely value it. It plays a special role in thyroid hormone and digestive activities.

If there is a lack of iodine, it has a major effect on physical growth or structure.
But many of us do not know how much iodine we need or in what kind of food it can be found?

After research, Professor Margaret Rayman of Surrey University has found that there is a shortage of iodine in many modern healthy foods which can create serious health issues especially for pregnant women.

Why do we need iodine?

Thyroid hormone plays a key role in digestion and body growth and iodine is an important part of this hormone.

“The lack of iodine is the main cause of the lack of human intelligence or lack of learning, which can be prevented,” says Professor Rayman.

“If pregnant women do not get enough iodine, their children may be born with intellectual disabilities or hormonal problems.” She said.

Iodine problem lies in many neighborhoods near the Alps. There is also a large number of thyroid gland swelling in the neck. Large swelling thyroid glands are also seen in their throat.

Professor Rayman says, now we know it is a visible sample of iodine deficiency. Thyroid glands may swell excessively as it tries to store iodine from blood.

Healthy Food Risks

Among the foods all over the world, probably the main source of iodine is white fish and eggs.

Iodine is also mixed with food-salt in most countries.

In many countries like the UK, people get iodine directly from milk and dairy products, because iodine is added to the diet of cows.

But in industrialized countries too, iodine deficiency is seen among many people. There is a lack of iodine in food, that is not because of that. The main reason, they do not want to eat these foods.

The most vegetarians are in this group who do not have meat in their food menu. The number of these teams is increasing day by day.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has done a recent study on people of different ages, there were also pregnant women among them.

The organization has found that iodine acceptance rate among vegetarians is very low.
Professor Rayman has also found that vegetarians and those who do not eat meat, such pregnant women also have iodine problems in their children.

In the 1990s, Professor Rayman collected samples from more than 14,000 pregnant women. Then she kept observing the health and growth of them and their children.
Especially they closely monitored the power of children's education and their intellectual capacity. They analyzed their data.

They found that women who had iodine problems, their children received fewer marks in the oral intelligence test at the age of eight. At the age of nine too, they had less capacity for their studies. They have seen this test, the problems of the mother have affected their children.

But the most worrying thing is that those who had a little iodine deficiency, this problem was also strong among them.

Where is iodine available?

The world's largest source of iodine is the ocean.

Iodine comes into human body by consuming plants or animal meat which comes through food cycle from the sea to the sky, the environment, the rain etc.

But there is no sea-touched rain in landed areas at all times. Again, those who are dependent on locally produced food also do not get iodine in all foods. These events occur in the Alps, in remote areas of Pakistan or in mountainous areas of Italy, Russia and Central Africa.

Iodine deficiency is also seen in flood prone areas like Bangladesh. Because flood water washes away iodine from the soil.

How much iodine is needed every day?

Experts suggest that one woman should have 150 to 300 micrograms of iodine in their food per day. But iodine levels are different in each meal. So it is difficult to say how much iodine one can get in the amount of food one eats.

However, oily fish does not contain the same amount of iodine that white fish contains. There is more iodine in cold milk.

There is also considerable iodine in milk that is not organic. Due to the regulations what have to be fed to the farm cows, this milk becomes iodine-rich.

Best of all, eating different types of food. Do not completely remove the type of food like meat, unless the doctor has a restriction.

Hair loss causes in young males:
What causes hair loss in your 20s? Androgenic alopecia is known as Male Pattern Baldness. Though it can affect both men and women, males are affected by it at their teenage or early 20s. Alopecia areata can cause complete baldness although hair returns in 90% cases. Young adults and children are the most sufferers of it.

Hair loss causes in young females:
About 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are women. The most causes of hair loss in young women are:
  • Androgenetic alopecia,
  • Fluctuating hormone (Estrogen) levels,
  • Physical and emotional stress,
  • Pregnancy,
  • Eating disorder, and
  • Excessive styling.
Hair loss environmental causes:
Dust and smoke create air pollution. Dust and smoke contain various kinds of chemicals which settle on the scalp and hair. 'Sensitive Scalp Syndrome' is created by these. As a result, hair roots experience itching, oily scalp, dandruff and pain. All these things cause hair loss.

Can head lice make your hair fall out?
There is no scientific evidence that lice is directly responsible for hair loss. But lice cause inching which causes people to pull out their own hair.

Hair loss is a global problem. To get rid of this problem, we have to know the causes of hair loss first. From the above discussion we have known that physical and emotional stress can cause hair fall. Pollution is also responsible. It is true that, we have no hand in the genetic causes of hair fall, but we can change our life-style to be free from avoidable causes.

Acne Causes Before 20 | You can Ignore But a Teenager Not

Acne is nothing but a name of a tension of teenagers. I had acne on my face when I was a teenager. I am 32 now. I have no acne on my face but some exist on my back now. I know if I say, "Don't worry. Your(the teenagers) acne will vanish forever when you will grow up", it won't satisfy you.

It is true that acne exists in the twenties, thirties and a few in the forties. In women, it remains a little longer. But whatever I say, teenagers can not ignore acne as they are more conscious of their appearance. And whenever they go in front of the mirror, they become nervous to see acne on their face. And the result is depression, anxiety, low self-esteem etc.

Acne mostly appears on the face. It may also pop up on back, chest, shoulders and neck. Acne on the face is the main matter of concern. In this case, many questions come to teenager's mind. The first question comes, "Why does acne occur in teenage most?".

The causes of acne are many. During puberty and menstrual period hormonal activity increases. At this time, the rise of a sex hormone called 'Androgen' causes acne. The hormones that are directly and indirectly associated with acne are:
  • Androgens testosterone
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
  • Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
  • Growth hormone (High levels) and
  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF- 1)
According to some studies, genetic factors are responsible for acne. That means you may get acne from your parents.

The other causes of acne may include:
  • Cosmetics (Greasy): Oil-based makeups are more responsible than water-based.
  • Androgen and lithium containing medicines and
  • Menstruation
Some causes may worsen acne. Such as:
  • Friction (to lean on skin or to rub the skin)
  • To pick or squeeze blemishes
  • Pressure from backpacks, helmets etc. and
  • Emotional Stress.
Many people blame infections and diet for acne. But the role of infection and diet is not clear or well understood.

Problems in Eyes in Middle Age

Along with some common problems, some particular problems are occurred in eyes in the middle and old age. Dr. Nafis Ahamed, senior consultant of eye department in Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital, has talked about it in an interview with nTV.bd recently. Many unknown and important things have come up in his speech. Let’s know the important things:

The first question is, what kinds of problems are occurred in the middle and old age? This can be divided into two parts. One is infective. It means infection which is occurred by germs such as bacteria. Another reason is non-infective or non-microbial. Among the microbial diseases, the most widespread is corneal ulcer. Another one is dakriosistitis, inflammation or infection of eye duct or tear duct. These two are very common. Conjunctivitis is also seen. These problems are caused by microbes.

Non-microbial diseases are also divided into two parts. One is reversible blindness. This blindness can be brought back to vision again. Cataracts is such kind of problem.

On the other hand, there are some diseases such as glaucoma, which is not reversible. So, the prevalent diseases are glaucoma, cataracts, corneal ulcer, dakriosistitis and problems occurred by injury.

There are many reasons of the reduction of the power of the eyes. It could be caused due to disease. Eye power may decrease close to the age of 40. This problem is related to age. The intensity of the problem increases slowly to 50 years of age.

One special kind of water is created in our eyes. There are some ways inside the eyes. The water gets out through the ways. For any reason, if the ways age blocked, water cannot pass through them. When water cannot go out, it creates pressure inside the eyes. These pressure affects the optic nerve. Optic nerve helps us to see. So, if the optic nerve is damaged, it will not be brought back again. It can be damaged if it is not diagnosed timely. And the ultimate result is blindness.

How much you know about Summer Heat Stroke?

Every year, temperature is rising. The earth is becoming warmer. But the temperature of human body is regulated internally. Our body tries to maintain its own temperature though the temperature of the environment is increased. Then the body starts to sweat. Sweat is evaporated and our body becomes cool. But if there is not enough stored water in the body, problems occur. The body becomes warmer with the increase of humidity. As a result, evaporating ability of sweat decreases. Thus the situation of heat stroke is created.

Who experience Heat Stroke:
Children and elderly people cannot regulate body temperature more. So, they could have heat stroke. In addition to that, labor may be a cause of heat stroke. Standing or working in the sun for a long time is also susceptible to heat stroke. Besides, some diseases are more vulnerable to heat stroke. Patients of skin disease such as ectodermal dysplasia and diabetes have a risk of severe heat stroke. In addition, there is a risk of heat stroke to those who take some medicines such as antihistamines, aspirin and medicines for mental illness. Obese people have high risk of heat stroke.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
Feeling tired, nausea, dizziness and feeling muscle pain are the early symptoms of heat stroke. At this level, the body temperature remains below 106 degree Fahrenheit. If the patient is not treated at the right time, he may become unconscious. Body temperature may rise above 106 degree Fahrenheit. Different types of organs of the body began to break down. When heart failure occurs, blood pressure decreases. Due to the damage in the lungs, breathing is disturbed. Urinating stops as the kidneys do not work. The body’s ability to coagulate blood reduces and bleeding from different parts of the body starts. Some of the symptoms of heat stroke are similar to the symptoms of various kinds of diseases such as cerebral malaria, meningitis, septicemia etc. Therefore, heat stroke and the diagnosis of diseases require caution.

What to do in case of heat stroke:
As it has been said earlier, some of the symptoms of heat stroke coincide with some diseases. The patient has to be taken to hospital as quickly as possible.
  • Patient has to be shifted warmer place from cold environment. If possible, keep the patient in air conditioned room.
  • Try to reduce body temperature anyhow. Wipe the whole body with water. If necessary, the body has to be covered with wet cloth.
  • The patient’s nose and mouth should be kept clean so that he can take breath easily.
  • In the hospital, oxygen is given. Besides oxygen, potassium and saline are given if the amount of potassium in the body decreases. In case of bleeding, blood has to be given.
However, one word has to be kept in mind that the patients of heat stroke are not given aspirin to reduce temperature. Because, aspirin increases the tendency of bleeding.

Do the following to avoid heat stroke:
  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. If possible, work in the open air.
  3. Wear light, loose cotton cloths.
  4. You can take shower twice a day.
  5. Take an umbrella when you go in the sun.

Multitalking has no benefits, it is bad for brain, it causes brain damage. There are many articles on the web and many videos on Youtube on multitasking. From those articles and videos you can easily know, "Is multitasking good or bad?"

Another way of increasing mental power is not gathering unnecessary information in the brain. It is the same how we delete unnecessary information from our computer. Besides, we should keep those things away which divert our attention when we are engaged in important tasks and thinking. Such as cell phone, social media or friends. Learning new things(for example: foreign language), inventing something or thinking something new can be the best ways of improving fertility of the brain.

NDTV published an article on Feb 03, 2016 where they have given us 10 tips and tricks how we can improve our memory power. According to the article, proper sleep at night, physical exercise, giving up multitasking, taking natural food, getting organized, meditation etc. can improve our memory power. Some more tips are given below in this regard-

Many researches show that education increases the activity power of mind. According to this information, the more a man is educated, the more his mentality is rich. As a result, their brain prevent mental tiredness. It has been seen that memory destroying disease Alzheimers attacks higher educated people late.

Solve Crossword:
If you do not want to go back to school again, solve crossword. Though you remain busy with your study in your young age, crossword can be the solution in older age. A study found that brain disease dementia goes two months back if you remain busy with crossword for one day.

Give Up Negative:
Giving up negative from mind can be the best way of retaining mental power. When our mind is anxious of anything, our brain takes preparation accordingly. For this reason, negative thoughts are set permanently in the brain. As a result, Alzheimers attacks in our middle age. On the other hand, positive and constructive thoughts increase brain power.

Use Your Sensory Organ:
Human brain remembers the information receiving from different sensory organs. Though in small portion, human brain is very active to remember the information receiving from seeing, listening and touching. For an example, if you take the smell along with seeing a flower, you will be able to remember the flower easily in future.

It is very beneficial for health. It gives energy which is essential for starting a long day. So, to be physically active all day long and to reduce food intake, never skip your breakfast. A study conducted by University of Bath in Britain has found it. Times of India published a report on the study on Feb 13, 2016.

Researchers have found scientific evidence how breakfast changes our health. Though the study result highlights the impact of breakfast, it still depends on personal goals of the individual, one of the researchers said.

The researchers divided some obese people aged 21-60 into two groups. One group was fasting and another group was breakfasting. They studied the people for six weeks. Researchers asked the breakfasting group to eat almost 700 calories before 11 am. The group consumed the asked quantity of meal within two hours of their waking up. Researchers allowed the fasting group water only.

If you think about weight loss, researchers have little suggestions for you. But if you think about a healthy lifestyle, researchers have suggestions for you relating eating breakfast. On the other hand, different people respond to food differently and they do not take equal breakfast.

A registered dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, Chole Miles also acknowledged the importance of breakfast. Techtimes.com mentioned it in one of their articles on Jan 27, 2016. Studies have shown that more than 60 percent Americans do not take breakfast. They argue that their busy schedule is the main cause behind it. But it has been proved unhealthy for them.

So, we should take breakfast considering the following matters:
1. Breakfast is important for brain. Students who take breakfast regularly can make good results in their test.
2. After a long fasting night, our body want energy. Foods rich in fiber, vitamin C and D, and glucose give us the required energy.
3. Researchers have found that skipping breakfast increases the risk of being more obese.
4. A study in Japan found that people who skip breakfast can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Air Pollution Kills Millions Every Year: Study

Do you know the report on air pollution presented by the WHO? The report is not good at all. According to the report-
  • More than 80% people who live in urban areas are exposed to air pollution that exceeds the limits of WHO’s air quality levels.
  • Although all regions of the world are affected, low-income cities are the worst victims.
  • As a result of increased air pollution, the risk of numerous diseases like stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, acute and chronic respiratory diseases, asthma etc. have increased tremendously.
Air is an important element of our environment. And our air is seriously polluted by smoke. We make fires to cook food. We make bricks, melt tar for road construction and to do many other things. Fire creates smoke and pollute the air. Railway engines and powerhouses create smoke by burning coal and oil. Mills and factories also belch smoke a lot. On the other hand, motor vehicles such as cars, buses, and trucks use petrol and diesel oil. These too emit smoke. All these kinds of smoke pollute the air.

Outdoor and household air pollution all over the world kills over 5.5 million people prematurely each year. Most of the deaths occur in the two largest populated countries China and India. They account for nearly 55% of the total deaths. A new study has found it.

The researchers said that In China, 1.6 million people died of air pollution in 2013. In India, it was 1.4 million. The number of deaths will increase tremendously if appropriate measures are not taken, said the international team of researchers from the US, Canada, China and India.

The Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) presented the findings on 12 Feb 2016, Times of India and Time magazine reported it on the same day.

Air pollution mostly caused by burning wood and coal which are used in power plants and industrial manufacturing is very dangerous for man's health. Vehicle fumes and smoke created by burning coal, oil and wood release small particles which cause air pollution is standing as the fourth highest risk factor for death all over the world.

Burning biomass, wood and dung for cooking is the main cause of air pollution in India while burning coal is the main factor of air pollution in China. Only outdoor air pollution killed 366,000 people in 2013 in China. It is predicted that the number may rise to 990,000 to 1.3 million in 2030.

The other countries where the number of deaths created by air pollution has increased are Pakistan, Japan and Brazil.

The findings of the research did not surprise anybody because earlier research showed that outdoor air pollution caused over 3 million deaths every year and it suggested that the number would be double by 2050.

Some countries are taking several actions to reduce air pollution but the actions are not enough to reduce the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution worldwide.

According to the research, nearly 200,000 people in Europe and more than 80,000 people in the US die of air pollution every year.

So, nobody can hide or run from pollution. But everybody can get benefits if air quality is improved

Cancer Days for Awareness

Every year, 'World Cancer Day' is observed on 4 February and 'International Childhood Cancer Day' is observed on 15 February. The main objectives of observing the days are:
1. Raising awareness about cancer and
2. Expressing support for cancer patients, survivors and their families.

In 2016, 'World Cancer Day' was observed on 4 February. Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) organized the day. On the day, world community adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) to ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all. To reduce premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases like cancer everybody has acknowledged that collaborative action is imperative. WHO provided guidance engaging UN agencies and entities. WHO says that global participation and commitment is required for comprehensive cancer control.

Though rare, Childhood Cancer which arises in childhood(0-15 years) touches all regions of the world. According to World Health Organization(WHO), more than 150,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. The number may increase in future. Low and middle income countries cannot afford to treat their childhood cancer patients where 80% of cancer of children is treatable. Among all cancers, leukemia is the most common in childhood. Cancer registries which show actual data on cancer incidence are not available in poorer countries.

So, all governments, NGOs and other organizations should work together to prevent and cure cancer. Observing cancer days can be fruitful if collective actions are taken.
